This year the new year started with more hope and contentment than I have experienced in recent years, because 2009 was my most fulfilling year ever. I had several significant successes, personal and career-related, and above all grew a lot spiritually. By that I mean that I progressed as never before in going deep within myself to better understand myself and my motivations. Most importantly, I became obsessed with becoming fully expressed: by that I mean that I was determined to cling tenaciously to the path of knowing my self and my purpose and role on Earth. Full expression of ourselves implies a thirst for self-knowledge and self-acceptance and an openness to self-discovery and surprises! SO, I, WHO BELIEVE THAT BEING YOURSELF IS THE KEY TO YOUR HAPPINESS AND SUCCESS, DID IN FACT EXPERIENCE 2009 AS THE FIRST TIME IN MY LIFE THAT I PRACTISED BEING MYSELF AS NEVER BEFORE. O.K., so far I have referred to the positive aspects of the first few days of the New Year for me. In truth, for the better part of this first half of January, I have been in a ‘funk.’ It has been somewhat disturbing. I questioned whether it was burn-out from a pretty hectic year. I have actually now deduced it could be a common medical condition, and I will soon get verification of this. My point in writing about this is to discuss the importance of letting go, especially when our body gives us signals that it needs rest, extra care and attention. Life does get in the way, and more frequently than not, of our best intentions to follow through on our plans. How well we adapt to life circumstances and surprises will determine to a certain extent how well we feel about ourselves and life. Thinking that we have more control over life events than is borne out by facts, will only serve to increase our level of stress and anxiety, as we take actions to make our belief in control come true! I have learned long ago, that letting go of the mistaken perception that we have great control over life events actually brings with it relief and inner peace. In the Sedona Method: Your key to lasting happiness, success, peace and emotional well-being, by Hale Dwoskin, we learn that control, security and approval are needs that are common to all. However, an obsession with these causes suffering. Releasing the need for these when we are suffering brings pain relief. It also brings us back to the present versus worry about the future. Worrying about control, security and approval is fear-based thinking about the future. Always opt for love-based thoughts and actions and let your feelings guide you in knowing the difference between fear and love-based living.

Welcome the gift of learning. My most recent learning concerns a new and long-overdue awareness of the extent to which my past has ruled my life. I suspect there might be others like me among you: hard-working, good-intentioned and deserving people who are unknowingly burdened by the weight of a painful past experience. It is never too late to learn what the past can reveal to us. The learning I want to share with you today stems from my experience of Christmas. When I was a child of 7 years of age, my father suffered a stroke and paralysis that required months of rehabilitation and recovery. We were a family of 6, and we were left without a bread-winner for a time. I have only recently noticed that it is that Christmas that has literally haunted me to this day. My family ended up on welfare back then, and surely the pain and suffering around me, of my parents, the worry, the uncertainty of the future, the feeling of helplessness and fear all must have struck me to the core, because I have been carrying it around ever since, albeit unknowingly. Until now, I have not been able to connect the dots: Why have I not been able to enjoy Christmas? Why have I always felt an inexplicable sadness pervade me in December that I have been unable to understand? In truth, I have not fully or truly enjoyed a Christmas since that significant Christmas so long ago. We were actually rescued from a total Christmas disaster by some caring, anonymous folks who donated food and gift items that year, to those in need. To this day, I remember the unexpected knock that sounded at the kitchen door on Christmas Eve that year, as we humbly marveled at the delivery that followed by a kind stranger making the rounds to families like mine: a turkey, some other food items, but, above all, gifts! I recall distinctly feeling it was a miracle. It’s a pity, though, that despite the generosity of strangers, I must have felt I could not permit myself to enjoy the gifts, given the apparent suffering of my parents during this uncertain and frightening time-the fear of the future and what it would bring was palpable. Like others who suffered adversity in life, I too grew stronger from this childhood experience. Let me conclude by saying this: I am grateful today for my insights about this Christmas-motivated most perhaps from my own exasperation about annually robbing myself of the pleasure of a beautiful and special season. AT LAST I SEE THAT IT DOES NOT HAVE TO BE THIS WAY. You and I can change the programming, once we have the awareness of its negative and non-supportive impact upon us. Simply put, I am not that frightened, guilt-ridden child any longer. I choose to celebrate my extreme good fortune in life this Christmas, like I have never before celebrated it-with a new awareness of how lucky I am and knowing that I can release the bonds of painful experiences from the past. It’s about time! It’s a choice available to all. Please accept my warmest and heart-felt season’s greetings to you for peace, love, harmony and prosperity during this special season and in the new year.

Holding grudges. Negative self-talk. Being stubborn. Hiding out, playing it safe. Not listening to people. Hiding our feelings. Feeling different or separate from others. Trying to be like other people. Struggling with perfectionism. All of these are examples of our resistance to the world around us. So how do we notice our resistance when it appears? What are the clues that might signal we are resisting what ‘is?’ We might notice that we feel isolated or lonely; or we feel disconnected from others; we might feel an emptiness or inexplicable anger inside. A feeling of hopelessness can pervade our lives. Often inertia and paralysis strike when we are struggling with resistance. Likely we feel that life has not met our expectations, or that something vital is missing that would give it meaning and fulfillment. What to do when we experience these feelings? By the time we start noticing these signs it is evidence that we have been ignoring our inner voice and it has caught up with us and that the time has come to look within ourselves for solutions to what ails us. I started this blog last month and return to it. I realized as I wrote my morning pages this morning that I have been hiding out. As though hiding out were to bring me safety. MY WONDERFUL INSIGHT FOR TODAY THAT I WISH TO SHARE WITH YOU IS THIS: when I feel resistance and I am inclined to want to withdraw, I am choosing the method I used as a terrified child. Afraid to speak up and to show up and possibly to face the potential of being scorned or humiliated. For hadn’t I been told that children are meant to be seen and not heard? Given this upbringing, is it any wonder that at times we seek the safety of hiding out from the world? THE IRONY IS THAT this pattern of behaviour does nothing to build us up or to help us thrive and to grow. So the cost of seeking safety takes a terrible toll: denial of our selves and our birthright to fulfillment, full expression and happiness. Start today and listen to your heart. And notice when you are taking on the habit of reacting to life in the child-like ways when you were small, defenceless and completely dependent upon the good will of adult figures in your life. YOU ARE A GROWN-UP TODAY! Recognize your power and your ability to make new rules for yourself. Reclaim the beautiful, joyful and magnificent self you are if you’ll only give yourself permission. It is the greatest gift you can give yourself in this season of re-birth and celebration. Blessings to you all during this joyous season of hope and renewal, and a Happy New Year to you all.

I recently read the introduction to my upcoming book about life lessons to my writing group. Some of the feedback I received concerned my credibility and it was suggested I include my credentials. To say that this is a predictable response would be quite the understatement. I have struggled at times with self-doubt in the process of writing my first book. Questions like ‘who do you think you are?’ and ‘what value does the book content have, given my ordinary station in life?’ have hounded me from time to time. But, I know this with absolute certainty: these are the natural and normal questions that arise in any beginner. First attempts might not be elegant, but mastery requires our belief that beginners can become masters with practice. It simply takes committment, self-belief and consistent application to the task. We must also believe that we are worthy and full of un-tapped potential. We must believe that we can achieve what we focus on. The issue about credentials is one that intrigues me. What does our obsession with credentials have to say about us? Though the question about credentials can be said to have undeniable relevance, how often is our obsession about credentials simply fear-based thinking? Does this obsession reflect mostly just our fear of trusting one another? Is it that we don’t trust ourselves, so how can we trust one another, especially if they haven’t yet acquired fame and celebrity status? Is what you or I say irrelevant if we have no credentials to back it up? Does our experience lack relevance or value because of a perceived deficiency regarding credentials? What does this perceived lack have to say about you rather than me? Why is it true that one’s celebrity status or credentials garner such respect and attention from us? I suspect it has a lot to do with our tendency to not trust ourselves and the tendency to look to others for direction. Most of us prefer to follow rather than to lead. It’s a choice we make. To follow rather than to lead is a fear-based decision. To lead and direct oneself is the self-loving option for living. The question of credibility and credentials also points to our tendency to put people on a pedestal. As one of my former coaches once remarked: ‘be careful-pedestals can crack.’ We idealize (we marvel at the star quality of people we admire). Let’s remember we all have those marvelous qualities that we admire in others within ourselves-with or without credentials. We have the potential for the greatness we admire in others. My message is simply this: let us not be obsessed or blinded by credentials. Rather, be concerned with the question of being true to who you are in all your decisions in life. Ask yourself if those with credentials are being true to who they are and to doing their highest good. If not, then of what relevance are the credentials? Recognize that you and I both have greatness within us. Everyone has a gift to share and something of value to impart on this earth. To love and respect ourselves is to love and respect others. Everybody deserves to be seen and to be heard-the only credential required: that those to who you turn to and lend an ear be seeking to do their highest good in life. In truth, it may not be possible for us to judge this. We cannot know the soul’s purpose of another human being, because we are not mind-readers. I choose, however, to trust in the inherent goodness and beauty in all humanity. So don’t be blinded by credentials as they do not tell the whole story about us. We are not our credentials-we are infinitely more.

Thank God we have the privilege and good fortune to live in a democracy that allows us to enjoy an unprecedented level of freedom. How it then, that some of us come to feel virtually trapped by life? My hunch is that some of us are virtually sleep-walking through life and have not yet awakened to or tuned into an awareness of the infinite number of possibilities that exist for us for optimal well-being. Granted, adult responsibilities can sometimes blind us to the plethora of opportunities that are available. But, what is truly at the bottom of feelings of entrapment and loss of control? It might be tempting to adopt the role of victim and to make the claim that one is a victim of life circumstances and the normal stresses of life. But I am convinced that life was not meant to be a struggle. On the contrary, we have free will. So, why don’t we exercise it? In a word, we fail to exercise it out of fear. The latter creates needless suffering. Taking control, true control of our destiny, implies free will to make the choices that best suit us. Without a doubt, fear, doubts and worries can be aroused when we opt for freedom of choice in deciding what is truly best for ourselves. But fear can be conquered. Unfortunately, way too often, rather than confronting the fear, we tend to look instead outside ourselves for instruction and guidance. We fail to take full responsibility for our own welfare. This, despite the fact that it is our own inner compass, heart and soul that holds the best answers for our life direction. Freedom is a gift and a responsibility. It is not something that just happens to us. We must seize it and use it to our own advantage for it to have true meaning and value in our lives. Freedom is a love-based choice. Not exercising it is fear-based. Start to create freedom in life or lose it and wither away. Our freedom-our choice.

Have we forgotten the freedom and audacity of youth? Recall how good it felt to feel powerful and magnificent beyond measure during early childhood. It was for many a time when we took for granted that the world was a safe and very loving place. We believed we could fly and be whatever we envisioned and our imagination knew no limits. We felt we were special, appreciated and secure, at least briefly. How is it that such a joyful time has been all but forgotten in adulthood? Life got in the way, somehow. Unfortunately, too, many of us grew to learn that the love of our parents was conditional. Is it any wonder that this hard life lesson lead to many of the limited beliefs that we acquired since then about how life is supposed to be? That most significant childhood lesson of all touched us deeply and permanently. All good things, we deduced, were conditional upon our good behaviour, and our ability to fit in and adapt. Our thinking became fear-based as we matured into adulthood. Our reality went from love-based to fear-based, from freedom to bondage.

It has been said that we spend the better part of the first half of life learning the rules and conditions for success and happiness. Our learning comes from authority figures at home, school, at work and at church. But the self nor the soul’s purpose will be denied forever. Eventually, as we lose ourselves in the process of following the dictates of others, an emptiness begins to pervade us. It is the self, longing to be expressed again, as it was in early childhood before the process of socialization began in earnest. The second half of our life is then often followed by the process of unloading the baggage we acquired in the first half: a good thing if one senses that the self has been ignored and denied.

The first sign of trouble within us is a malaise, and the initial response to that is a feeling that there must be something wrong with oneself. This mistaken belief is then often followed by application with renewed and even greater efforts made to meet or exceed the expectations of others. But ultimately one faces the dawning realization that seeking approval of others cannot and will not produce the longed-for inner peace. At this point, it is not yet obvious that one must turn one’s vision inward for answers. That comes after much more pain and several signs have appeared that finally lead one to a better analysis and conclusion: one finally discovers it is futile to believe that repeating self-defeating patterns will change one’s circumstances to create new results. At last we discern that we must change and become our selves and seek to discover the authentic gift to humanity we were meant to offer the world, in order to have the change we seek and the life fulfillment we yearn for. We are destined to return to a life that is love-based and self-loving, like the ways of a child, if we are to tap into our greatness and joy in life.

Getting in touch with the feelings of joy and freedom experienced at least briefly in childhood is an excellent starting point for inner world and outer world change. Tapping into creative outlets and interests and talents often discarded in adulthood can serve to evoke renewed feelings of hope. Knowing that each one of us is special and a ‘work of art,’ in a unique way, is a leap of faith we all once possessed and would do well to reclaim. It’s our birthright. We deserve the best in life and the world deserves to share in the special gift that each one of us possesses and was destined to bring forth in the world. Our love of ourselves must be unconditional.

We were destined to step up and into our power. It is the loving way and a force for good in a very troubled world. Had we made the (self-) love-based choices rather than the fear-based ones, the world would be a far more peaceful place. We are works of art destined to share our precious and unique gifts with the world. Start now. We can and we must. Playing small serves noone. The world needs you and me.

I spent a wonderful three days last weekend in one of my favorite recreational destinations off the island of Montreal, soaking in the fresh air, taking long walks and catching up on some sleep. However, it is Tuesday already as I write and I am still resisting getting back to work, as it were. Feelings. My feelings are wanting to be noticed more than ever, it seems. They seem to be trying to send me a message that I have not yet fully deciphered. It seems as though there is something new that I am being prodded to notice. Perhaps it is my intuition that is trying to speak to me. According to Neale Donald Walsch in Conversations with God, our Creator or God (or whatever name you like to assign to the Prime Force) communicates to us mainly through our feelings, though communication from God can take many forms. While it may be obvious to some, I was relieved to learn this, particularly since I had denied or ignored feelings so long during my former life. Once I started taking notice, however, my awakening had truly begun and a new-found joy in my life quickly followed. I have learned to trust my feelings like never before, whenever I need guidance and direction in life. It’s a mistake to tell oneself that feelings don’t matter-or that we must be ‘realistic.’ When I am told that it is good to be realistic, my mind wants to resist. Being realistic often implies ignoring one’s feelings and choosing instead to follow the dictates of others or to do things the way that things are supposed to be done. My feelings tell me this: that if being realistic means accepting less than one deserves or if it means going against what my heart is signalling to me, than the realistic option is one to avoid at all costs. If realistic suggests we must be grateful for what we have and that it is greedy to want more for ourselves, then I totally disagree. The inference is ‘I should be happy, and it would be wrong for me to desire and want more…’ Feelings that one ‘should‘ do or be anything other than one’s true self, are manifestations of limited beliefs. Who has not experienced true joy and known the truth and trustworthiness of such a feeling? Unless we are feeling joy routinely about life, and unless it is a feeling that can be sustained in the long term, something is indeed amiss in our life that needs to be addressed sooner not later. Our feelings are unique to us. Denying them is denying our ‘self ‘ and it is painful and an annihilation of Who we Are. To conclude, I am not sure what exactly my feelings and my soul are presently trying to communicate to me, but I intend to listen closely and to watch for signs that I know will appear. When the student is ready, the teacher appears~author unknown. Another wise saying comes to mind as I wait at the fork in the road: the path is smooth, why throw pebbles in your path? Honour your feelings-they will never betray you.

It is nice to be back to my blog after life recently got in the way of my well-laid plans. I am referring to an illness within my family that somewhat disrupted my schedule over the past few weeks. How do we deal with such disruptions? After all, life gets in the way for all of us from time to time, and can thwart our best efforts to stay on track with our own agenda. My immediate and initial reaction to this unexpected mini-crisis was at first some denial of the facts, followed by resistance. Questions like ‘why now?’ and ‘why is this happening?’ indicate resistance to what ‘is.’ Suffice it to say that neither response leads to either good feelings or a successful outcome. Resistance is needless and self-inflicted suffering and denial is counter-productive and stressful, like procrastination. Despite our wish that things might be different when life interferes with our plans, we can choose to feel like a victim or respond to the actual facts of the situation before us and be pro-active, i.e., decide what action steps are needed with which to navigate most successfully through the unexpected turn of events. In truth, though, while I chose to be pro-active and chose to take the high road, and to do what would be in my highest good and in the best interest of all concerned, choosing the self-loving and loving way is not always easy. But, so long as we struggle or rail against what is, we prolong our suffering. In Conversations with God, by Neale Donald Walsch, we are instructed to be first and foremost self-centered. ‘The most loving person is the person who is Self-centered.’ (page 124). ‘I tell you this-putting yourself first in the highest sense never leads to unGodly acts.’ (page 132). The mistake is to do things in a relationship out of a sense of ‘obligation.’ Bottom line: we can be loving only by mastering the ability to be self-centered. This suggests we must know our motives, and be aware of our purpose in all that we do in our relationships. My ultimate decision to be as helpful as possible and to provide some care-taking services to a beloved family member, was based on a very conscious decision: I wished to do what was in my highest good and that which truly reflects the person that I wish to be, the Who I am. Although this decision is very self-centered (in the sense that it is self-serving as well) this awareness and motivation lead to what was the most loving result for me and for the sick member in my family-for all concerned. I highly recommend Walsch’s book. It promotes personal freedom, clarity around relationship concerns, love of others and, above all, love of self and inner peace-all guaranteed, when mastered, to help us ‘go with the flow.’ Laila Beaudoin, Personal Success Coach, Montreal www.innerpeacenow.ca Tel: 514-697-6087

Your feelings may have given you clues that things are amiss in your life and all is not perfect. Asking yourself what you want is a great question and an excellent one to mobilize you to action that both quickly dispels the bad feelings and inspires hope for a better future. For some, however, the simple question may seem a bit daunting to contemplate. One suggestion is to start by rating yourself on all aspects of your life: health, financial, career, family and friends, relationship with a significant other, spiritual, and your place of work and/or where you live. These all contribute to your overall wellness. Identify those aspects of your life that require most attention. Define what you would like those aspects of your life to look like. If you rank your career sector as being unsatisfactory, then decide some action steps that would increase your level of satisfaction. Then an action plan can be made for implementing some of your action steps. Small and consistent changes will bring progress and with practice you will be making improvements and getting more of what you want in life. A book that can help you in this process is the following: Attracting Perfect Customers-The Power of Strategic Synchronicity by Stacey Hall & Jan Brogniez. Do not let the title dissuade you from considering it. It has practical advice on how to attract not only customers, but the perfect spouse, job and other wish items on your list. Enjoying the process is every bit as important as achieving goals. One piece of advice in the book worth mentioning here is that it is important to take the time to reflect on the horizon “where our vision lies.’ Not only is this a great motivator to keep you inspired, but it also serves to make it easier for you to attract what it is you are striving for.

I finally get it and I’m feeling this at a cellular level: there is no reason I can’t be feeling really good all the time. How did I suddenly understand this basic truth? Because when I take a real honest look at myself and I think back to times when I had angst and misery overcome me, I realize the reason I felt bad is that I had let my guard down and allowed my fears, worries and doubts take over me. The fear-based lower self, the ego, took over my higher, love-based thinking, sensible and wise self. You too can have such certainty and deserve to feel great all the time. It is your birthright. While it is true that fear-based thinking and self-inflicted pain is something we all struggle with at times, I believe that with self-awarenesss and a commitment to reduce the power of our fears upon us, we can all make enormous progress to overcome the fears and excuses that sabotage our level of happiness and success. That’s the first step: your decision and conviction that you deserve happiness and success and that you will do what it takes to attain it. You might ask ‘How do you do that?’ There are many ways: self-help books galore, devoted friends, seminars, role-models that inspire you, and professionals that have been trained to guide and support you. There is noone that has the power to rob your of your rightful claim to life fulfillment and satisfaction-except yourself. You deserve the best and you are responsible for your happiness. The process of going for what you want is the self-loving way and the recipe for feeling great all the time. Enjoy the journey. To your peace, Laila Beaudoin, Personal Success Coach, www.innerpeacenow.ca
